On July 31st, 2020, the first isUD (innovative solutions for Universal Design) certified hotel in the country opened its doors to the public. Born from the collaboration of the global hospitality company Hilton, Uniland Development Company and the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA), the Hampton Inn Buffalo – Amherst (New York) was designed with a socially responsible approach to provide an inclusive environment that empowers guests and visitors of all backgrounds, abilities and needs.
The universally designed, 107-room hotel is distinguishable from other hotels through its unique features throughout the facility that create an inclusive environment for guests and staff. The hotel also features a variety of guest room types, including accessible rooms, Universal Design rooms and Standard rooms, which all include Universal Design features and are dispersed throughout the 4-story building.
Notable Universal Design features include:
- Oversized circulation paths and primary routes of travel
- Generous clearances and turning space throughout the facility
- All public building entrances and exits at grade with level thresholds
- Comprehensive wayfinding system to improve orientation and find destinations
- Increased maneuvering space in sleeping rooms and bathrooms
- Motorized window shades in select rooms
- Salt water pool, which offers numerous health benefits
- Contactless check-in, check-out and room selection, and digital room keys via smartphone
- Hotel staff trained to assist guests of all abilities and to continuously maintain a universally designed environment
